A successful holiday let since 2004, the White Family became the new owners of Poplars Farmhouse in November 2014. Living overseas, Poplars Farmhouse is a perfect "home from home" where they can sail, cycle, walk the south downs, paddle, swim and build sandcastles in the Witterings. The children spend hours outside in the beautiful safe enclosed garden and love feeding the ducks and the geese. Above all, it's the perfect house for big family reunions! They hope you'll enjoy this house as much as they do.
Poplars Farmhouse was built in the 17th century on older foundations and was probably originally two separate dwellings.
This is the farmhouse where actress Alexandra Bastedo first set up her donkey sanctuary and lived for 22 years. She wrote a book about her time here entitled "Beware Dobbermans, Donkeys and Ducks" where she chronicles the often hilarious and sometimes dramatic saga of animal life in deepest Sussex - their arrivals, their loves, their hates and their relationships with the various celebrities who have stayed at Poplars Farmhouse. A copy is available to read at the house! The camellias growing outside the back of the dairy cottage were purportedly given to her by Richard Burton.
Alexandra lived with her husband producer Patrick Garland who was the longest serving artistic director of the Chichester Festival Theatre, considered the third most important theatre in England.
The house was sold and the new owners turned it into a very successful holiday let where families have been reuniting and hens weekending and companies have been team building very happily for the last 10 years. We hope to continue their work in making this home a comfortable and happy place to spend some time away from it all.
As we do not live in the area, we have Henry Adams Estate Agents managing our property and lettings. They are a very friendly and efficient team who are always happy to help. Please do not hesitate to contact them on 01243 375 893 or visit their website here
